By Allan Fox: Mikey Garcia claims he went to London and helped Anthony Joshua train for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on August 20th, with pointers.
The former four-division world champion Mikey says Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) was receptive to the advice he gave him. He feels confident that he’ll defeat unified heavyweight champion Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs) on August 20th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Hopefully, the advice that Garcia gave Joshua doesn’t involve him going out and throwing primitive haymakers, hoping to land one on the chin of Usyk.
It’s fair to say that if Joshua tries to steamroll Usyk, he’s going to lose worse than last September.
“He’s working with AJ, but I’m sure it’s not easy being away from home for so long, and that’s why we kind of wanted to go visit him and spend some time with him so that he wouldn’t be too alone for too long,” said Mikey Garcia to Fighthype about his brother Robert Garcia, who has been training Anthony Joshua in the UK.
“We went through the training with AJ for a few days. He’s looking very good. It seems like they got a really good game plan also. My dad and I were watching. Rob is obviously very, very good at what he does.
“So, we were watching and gave some opinions, and they [Team Joshua] were paying close attention to whatever my dad and I have to say and Robert too.
“We feel good about the fight. I feel that AJ has everything to win the fight. They look at and analyze each fighter for what they are for the kind of fighters that they are.
“Not to take anything away from Usyk, and Usyk did win the first match [with Joshua]. So it’s not like, ‘Oh f***, this should be an easy fight.’ Well, no, but when you look at what they bring to the ring, AJ has everything you need to beat a fighter like Usyk.
“I think he should win. It should be a good fight, though. I don’t know, possibly. We’ll see,” Mikey said when asked if he’ll attend Joshua vs. Usyk II. “We’ll see if I’m not busy with anything else during those days.
“It’s a long flight, and I would have to fly out a few days before the fight. We’ll see,” said Mikey.
