Former world champion Kostya Tszyu was not surprised by Oleksandr Usyk’s big win on Saturday in Saudi Arabia, but he wasn’t expecting Anthony Joshua to do as well as he did.
Usyk retained the WBO, IBF, IBO, WBA heavyweight titles with a twelve round split decision over Joshua.
It was a repeat outcome, as Usyk outboxed Joshua last September at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he secured a twelve round unanimous decision and the unified heavyweight crown.
Now begins the growing demand for an undisputed fight between Usyk and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Both world champions are unbeaten and regarded as the best boxers at the weight.
Fury, who recently announced that he was planning to retire from the sport, is now vowing to return to the ring to blow Usyk away. The two boxers have already traded some pre-fight banter.
Tszyu is among the many who want the Usyk vs. Fury showdown to come off.
“Initially I assumed that Usyk would win the fight, and that’s how it turned out. So, the result was not exactly a surprise. I liked the fight, it was good, it was interesting, with a certain level of intrigue. [Joshua] managed to do a little more in the ring than I expected,” Tszyu said to Vasily Bogdanov.
“Who would I like to see Usyk face in the next fight? Of course, I’d like to see him with Tyson Fury… this fight will definitely create an increased amount of interest. It is difficult to single out a favorite in this pairing – because Fury is a very unconventional fighter.”
