Jake Paul on Tank-Garcia: I’m Rooting For Garcia, It’s a 50-50 Fight

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and every other highly celebrated platform, have all been used by Ryan Garcia in an effort to both build his name and chastise his longtime rival, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Following his recent triumph in the ring, a sixth-round demolition job over Javier Fortuna, Garcia pontificated over the possibility of facing Davis in his next outing. As the two now attempt to negotiate terms to a feasible showdown, Jake Paul has chimed in on whose side he’ll be on come fight night.

“I’m rooting for Ryan in that fight,” said Paul to a group of reporters. “It’s going to be a tough fight, I think it’s a 50/50 fight.”

Paul, unsurprisingly, has perpetually gone back and forth with Davis in the public eye. While the Baltimore native is widely lauded for his drawing power and cataclysmic showings in the ring, Paul remains unimpressed with the rest of his overall game. In one of his more recent performances, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) boldly climbed one division to take on Mario Barrios in June of 2021.

The San Antonio native fought a calculated bout, keeping Davis at bay with his four-inch reach advantage. Still, even with the powerful southpaw eventually closing the distance and stopping his man in the 11th round, Paul reveals that if Barrios was simply just a tad bit more durable, he would have won their bout, at least on his scorecards.

“Gervonta hasn’t shown really the ability to win a lot of rounds. Even with Barrios, he was losing a lot of those rounds on my scorecards. Obviously, he’s in the Mayweather protection program so a lot of the judges are probably paid off to score for Gervonta but Barrios was winning those rounds in my opinion before he got dropped.”

Regardless of Paul’s scorecards, all three judges scoring from ringside had Davis ahead by a considerable margin.

Since violently stripping Barrios of his WBA “Regular” 140-pound title, Davis has gone on to eke out a close unanimous decision victory over Isaac Cruz. And, most recently, a sixth-round knockout win over Rolando Romero.

Though nothing is set in stone as of yet, Paul remains convinced that if Garcia can simply steer clear of the truculent Davis and his otherworldly power, then he’ll be just fine in their proposed showdown.

“If Ryan can just not get hit with those big punches, then I think he can pull it off.”
