Erickson Lubin: “A Fight With Tony Harrison Makes Sense”

With his fists clenched in frustration, Erickson Lubin believes that he was just one win away from returning to the scene of the crime.

In October of 2017, after racking up a spotless record, Lubin (24-2, 17 KOs) stood across the ring from Jermell Charlo. Anxious to begin his reign as a world champion, Lubin’s dreams turned into a nightmare as Charlo ended his title chase in the very first round.

Fast forward five years later, and Lubin successfully peeled himself up off the deck and would go on to register six consecutive victories. With a crack at Charlo looming, Lubin attempted to brush aside the lumbering and lanky Sebastian Fundora earlier this year. While he had his moments, Lubin would eventually succumb to his foe’s relentless pressure via ninth-round stoppage.

As the 27-year-old sifts through the rest of the 154-pound landscape, he refuses to work his way from the bottom up. Instead, if the decision were his and his alone, Lubin would rather face another top contender.

“I’d say a fight with Tony Harrison makes sense,” said Lubin to BoxingScene.com. “Just look at both guys. Everybody been wanting to see that fight, they been anticipating that fight in this division. Tony’s a good fighter, I’m a great fighter so I think stylistically, I think that would be a fight that everybody would want to see.”

Harrison, a former WBC belt holder, has re-emerged as a bonafide contender following his recent outing. Serving as the co-main event to Fundora vs. Lubin, Harrison ended his two-fight skid by scoring a one-sided victory over Sergio Garcia.

With all championship roads leading to a showdown against Charlo, Lubin believes that in order to achieve his ultimate goal, he’ll be forced to fight Harrison at some point.

“We both trying to get back on top and get all the way to the top and be one of those top guys.”
